About Our Kennel
Alaric Bull Terriers
Alaric Bull Terriers began in 1968 when my father, Michael, purchased our first brood bitch from Bill & Hope Colket, the owners of Silverwood Kennels. Her name was Silverwood Shannon. (Jane) Over the course of the next five years, she gave us three litters of puppies and we were off. My childhood consisted of caring for, training and playing with bull terriers every day of my life. I assisted in whelping many litters and basically lived & breathed bull terriers. On weekends, we would load up the car and head off to one dog show or another, often traveling in blizzards or hurricane like rains!! My first obedience dog was our family pet, Tarzan with whom I won a third place ribbon which I cherished more than anything I owned. I was an avid junior handler and showed bull terriers at 4-H fairs and at AKC shows for many years. Alaric Bull Terriers produced a number of champions and many loving family pets over fifteen years.
I also had the good fortune to be schooled by some of the great bull terrier breeders and exhibitors such as Alfred Bibby, Marilyn Drewes, & Winkie Mackay Smith. When I went off to college, it was with my bull terrier bitch, Angie (Charlies Angel of Alaric) in tow. She was my best friend through some challenging college and graduate school years. Angie lived until she was 13 and I found myself without a dog for the first time in my life. That did not last very long and I brought home Diablo, an American Bulldog, as an eight week old puppy. He lived to be nearly 15. My husband and I were not ready for another dog for a few years after losing Diablo and we couldn’t agree on what kind of dog we wanted. I had told him so many stories about growing up with bull terriers, he wanted to meet some. So, we headed to the AKC’s Meet the Breeds eleven years ago to check out the bull terriers and introduce him to some of the other breeds we were considering. Well, we didn’t get beyond the Bull Terrier booth because a silly little tri-color girl found her way into his lap and he was hooked. Also, on this day, I met Dede Wilson who realized as we talked, that Lily, her first bull terrier, was a puppy her father had bought from my father! I had named her Patches (after a favorite song) and I remembered the day Dede came with her parents to buy her! Of course, we were both in tears remembering that day. Such Kismet pretty much sealed the deal that my beloved bull terriers would once again be a part of my life!
The following April, we brought home our girl Gemma, (Bur Oak’s Golden Gemma of Alaric CGC, RATN, TKN) and two years later, we added to our breeding program with Aria (Can/Am GrCh Ch Action’s Soul Power of Alaric, ROM, TKN) who capped off an illustrious and very successful show career by winning the Silverwood Trophy in 2017. She also represented the American Team at the International Show in Leiden 2015 & 2017. Both years the American team won Runner-up! Aria gave birth to her first litter sired by the 2018 Silverwood winner, GrChS Ch Grabo Testarossa Formula for Drama, ROM, in the summer of 2018. She had five gorgeous, healthy puppies, one of which, Aurora, lives with us at Alaric. Aria has a number of up and comers from her Summer 2019 litter bred to the exquisite British import Ch. Tawnbarr Star Chaser. Harley (Alaric Wish Upon A Star) already has a five point major towards her championship & Franco (Alaric Bright Soul Swinging On A Star) will soon be in the show ring.
GrCh B Action Shake, Rattle ‘N Soul At Alaric, TKN, ROM, GROM- “Aurora,” was chosen as a Silverwood 2020 Finalist and was BOS to her sire at the BTCA National Specialty Show and the MDBTC Specialty show. In 2020, she did extremely well under breed specialist judges and finished her championship in very limited showing. In 2021, She completed her grand championship in five consecutive, five point major shows this past summer. She completed her Grand Championship, Bronze in six shows. She was invited to both the 2021 & 2022 Westminster KC. She won BOV at Westminster, BOS at the prestigious Morris & Essex and BOV at the world’s greatest terrier show, Montgomery County KC this past October. She was a Silverwood Finalist again in 2021 and was awarded Select Bitch at the BTCA National Specialty. She is the #1 Colored Bull Terrier and the #2 National Owner Handled colored bull terrier as we finish out 2021. (Canine Chronicle Statistics) Her show career has been a breeder’s dream come true and we are extremely proud of her. We are hoping she will have continued success in the whelping box in 2022!
As preservation breeders, our priority in breeding is that our dogs be sound, healthy, social, even tempered, inquisitive and responsive to their humans. A bull terrier is not for everyone, so we ask our potential puppy owners to tell us enough about themselves so that we can choose the right puppy from our litter to suit your needs, family and lifestyle. Our puppies are raised with an enrichment protocol that encourages advanced neurological development, teaches attention as a behavior and, hopefully results in a happy, well-adjusted puppy who will grow into an operant dog for his/her family to enjoy. Regardless of whether you purchase a puppy for conformation showing, performance or as a family companion, we will be partners in your journey as you raise and train your puppy. We will be your resource, guide and mentor. Once we have chosen the puppy best suited to your needs, we will sign a contract that will outline the terms of our co-ownership. We hope to enjoy many years of joy, pleasure and friendship with the people to whom we entrust our Alaric puppies . We look forward to hearing from you and learning more about what you would like from an Alaric Bull Terrier.
